Remote work visas emerged in popularity in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Countries initially designed remote work visas to help stimulate their economies, which felt the impacts of reduced travel and business during the pandemic.  

At the same time, many employers started to work partially or fully remotely. In 2023, there will be more than 50 remote work visas worldwide, and even more governments are contemplating introducing remote work visas.  

We’ve compiled a list of current remote work visas, sometimes referred to as digital nomad visas, along with practical information for employers and employees.

A remote work visa is a short-term visa that allows people from one country to live and work in another. 

Remote work visas vary in duration and their ability to be extended. Some remote work visas are offered for just six months, while others allow a foreign national to stay for one or two years. Countries also vary in their requirements for applying for a remote work visa. Minimum income requirements are standard, and many countries require proof of employment.  

Frequently, people use the terms “remote work visa” and “digital nomad visa” interchangeably. However, they are not identical terms. A digital nomad visa is usually reserved for self-employed people working remotely with their laptops. Remote work visas permit work abroad for an established company, and the work setting may differ.  

Since the requirements for remote work visas vary by country, you should ask an immigration services provider about the unique requirements for a destination where your company wants to send talent. Below is a running list of countries offering remote work visas:

Albania Remote Work Visa  

Albania has majestic coastlines and a warm climate. The majestic Albanian Alps traverse the country’s interior, and the country also hosts spectacular architecture that includes castles and archaeological sites. Remote workers who appreciate nature and history may enjoy working in Albania, along with those who are simply looking for a beautiful destination with warm weather and beaches.  

Albania launched its remote work visa, called the Type D Visa, in early 2022. Digital nomads and workers with employment abroad qualify for this visa type. The minimum income requirement for the Type D Visa is $9,800, which is about $315 per month. The Type D Visa is initially valid for one year but can be renewed for up to five years. Individuals who want to stay longer than five years may apply for permanent residency. The visa is available for multiple categories, including investors, self-employed workers, pensioners, highly qualified employees and research.   

Anguilla Remote Work Visa  

Anguilla is an island of paradise in the Caribbean. Along with pristine shores, stunning sunsets and delicious food, Anguilla is also a rising destination for working remotely. 

Anguilla launched a program for remote workers in August 2020. This remote work visa allows remote workers to live on the island for three to 12 months. Individuals may bring their dependents to the island, and remote students may apply for a visa. There is no income tax for visa holders. Individuals must be self-employed or employed by a company outside Anguilla to be eligible for the visa. Individuals require valid health insurance during their stay and a police clearance (applicable to individuals age 18 and older).   

Antigua and Barbuda Remote Work Visa     

 Antigua and Barbuda is a beautiful island nation in the Caribbean. Antigua and Barbuda introduced a new remote work visa in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The visa, called the Nomad Digital Residence (NDR), allows remote workers and their accompanying family members to join them in the country. The visa has a maximum two-year validity, and visitors require sufficient health insurance coverage for their stay. Applicants require an annual income of $50,000, and individuals must either own a location-independent business or work remotely for a company located outside of Antigua and Barbuda. Applications are submitted electronically. Applicants must provide proof of employment and pass a police background check. 

Argentina Remote Work Visa  

On May 21, 2022, Argentina became the second country in South America to offer a remote work visa. Qualified applicants include entry visa-exempt foreign nationals who can provide proof of employment outside of Argentina. Applicants can apply to the National Immigration office of Argentina, providing proof of a work contract, evidence of income, a resume and any other information on their professional and educational experience. This permit can be extended once for an additional six-month period. 

Aruba Remote Work Visa 

Aruba’s remote work visa is called “One Happy Workation.” Sandy beaches are just the start of Aruba’s appeal as a remote office! The work visa allows stays of up to three months, the application requirements are fairly simple , and no proof of income is required. Conditions include a 90-day limit on stays in Aruba, and applicants must be self-employed or employed outside of the country. Work is not permitted for an Aruban citizen or legal entity that would necessitate permits. Applicants must have a passport from a specific list of countries to be eligible. 

Australia Remote Work Visa 

Australia is a top destination for remote workers because of its sunny climate, great co-working spaces, and vibrant cities. Individuals who want to work remotely in Australia must first acquire a First Working Holiday Visa, which permits stays of up to one year. Remote workers may apply for a Second Working Holiday Visa to extend their stay if they meet certain criteria. Applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 35, and they must not have any dependents traveling with them. A valid passport is required, and individuals must be employed during their stay. Applications are accepted online and must be completed outside of the country. The application fee is 485 AUD for a one-year visa. 

Bahamas Remote Work Visa 

The Government of the Bahamas introduced a new remote work option for students and foreign remote workers. The new  Bahamas Extended Access Travel Stay (BEATS) permit is offered to workers and students. Qualified individuals may spend up to 12 months in the country, and the permit can be extended for up to three years. The average application processing time is just five days, and the application can be completed electronically. Certain conditions apply, including a requirement to show a sufficient income.

Barbados Remote Work Visa  

While many countries are shutting their borders during the COVID-19 pandemic, Barbados welcomes visitors with open arms. The Government of Barbados has launched a new program called the Barbados Welcome Stamp. This initiative gives foreign work visitors the ability to work remotely from Barbados for up to 12 months. 

To qualify, applicants must earn at least $50,000 annually and demonstrate adequate health insurance coverage. Upon a successful security screening and application payment of $2,000 (or $3,000 for families), workers wait about seven days for their approval. Along with its sandy shores, Barbados is an appealing work destination for its increasing ease of starting a business, with information technology, healthcare and international financial services among its strongest sectors. 

Belize Remote Work Visa  

Belize is a small country in the eastern part of Central America. The country shares borders with Mexico and Guatemala. Despite its small size, Belize has a great history, culture, and wildlife. The splendor continues offshore, too, as Belize contains the second-largest barrier reef in the world, which spans 180 miles. English is widely spoken throughout Belize, which makes it easy to communicate with friendly locals.  

Belize is also a destination for remote workers with its “Work Where You Vacation” remote work program. To apply, individuals must show proof of employment outside Belize, with a minimum income of $75,000 per person or $100,000 per family. Applicants also need at least $500,000 in travel insurance, police clearance within the past six months and a valid passport. 

Bermuda Remote Work Visa 

Bermuda offers a win-win scenario for companies and their employees. While sunny skies and beaches lure workers, employers are attracted to Bermuda for its stable currency and government and its strategic proximity to the U.S. 

The Government of Bermuda introduced a new Work from Bermuda Certificate that allows certain students and business professionals to work or study remotely in Bermuda. Currently, the certificate permits a 12-month maximum stay, with extensions available on a case-by-case basis. The application fee is only $263, and applicants typically receive notice of their application’s acceptance status within one week. Foreign workers must be at least 18 years old, show proof of employment or self-employment, and have a clean criminal record to qualify. 

Brazil Remote Work Visa  

On Jan. 24, 2022, the Government of Brazil introduced temporary visas and residence permits for foreign nationals to remain in the country without formal employment registered in the country. These visas and permits are initially valid for a period of one year and may be renewed for an additional year.   

Foreign nationals can apply for this visa type at a Brazilian consular facility in their home country or country of residence. Applicants must provide proof of valid health insurance and proof of a work or service contract that permits work as a digital nomad.

Cabo Verde Remote Work Visa  

Cabo Verde is an archipelago with 10 volcanic islands located west of Senegal. Each island is distinct, which makes it appealing to adventure-seeking remote workers. The country is also known for its culture and welcoming residents. Watersports are also popular, and the islands are home to unique wildlife onshore and offshore.  

Cabo Verde introduced a remote worker visa in December 2020 called the Cabo Verde Remote Working Program. The remote work visa is available to European citizens, the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP), North America and the Economic Community of West African States (CEDEAO). The visa allows an initial six-month stay, but individuals can extend their stay. To apply for the visa, individuals must show proof of income and have an average amount of €1500 in their bank account in the last six months, or €2700 for families. 

Canada Remote Work Visa  

Canada introduced a new immigration initiative aimed at attracting tech talent to the country. The new route, known as the Tech Talent Strategy, will consist of four key pillars to involve additions and improvements to currently existing immigration routes. The digital nomad program aims to promote Canada as a destination for digital nomads to work remotely.

On 30 January 2024, the Canadian government clarified the requirements for digital nomads. The digital nomad visa was introduced as an aspect of Canada’s Tech Talent Strategy. The government defines a remote nomad as the following: 

  • A digital nomad is a person who can perform their job remotely from anywhere in the world. 
  • A digital nomad only needs visitor status to relocate to Canada for up to six months while they perform their job remotely for a foreign employer or, if they are self-employed, working for themselves or providing services to clients outside of Canada.  
  • A person may enter as a digital nomad to work remotely but seek a work permit if they find a Canadian employer after entry. If an intention to find a Canadian employer is declared, they should be counseled that a work permit will be needed before starting work for such an employer. 
  • Additional documentation is not required of a person entering to be a digital nomad (although they must still satisfy the officer that they will leave at the end of their authorized stay). 

Family members of digital nomads who intend to work or study in Canada should apply for work or study permits. 

Cayman Islands Remote Work Visa  

The Cayman Islands in the Caribbean is another beautiful place attracting remote workers’ attention. The Cayman Islands is known for its fine sandy beaches and high standard of living. The island nation is also home to one of the largest offshore financial centers in the world. Internet connection is stable and reliable throughout the islands, and most of the nation accepts the USD as currency.  

The Cayman Islands remote work visa allows a two-year stay with some requirements, including the applicant working for a company outside the country. A minimum income requirement is $100,000 per individual, $150,000 per couple and $180,000 per family. Proof of employment or income is a requisite for the visa and legal proof of the employer. Individuals must show a police clearance letter, a bank reference and proof of identity such as a passport. Workers must have health insurance for at least the first 30 days upon arrival. 

Colombia Remote Work Visa  

Colombia is a unique remote work location that borders the Caribbean Sea in the north and the Pacific Ocean in the west. Colombia launched a remote work visa in October 2022. The visa is valid for up to two years. Dependents are permitted to accompany the primary visa holder. Eligible applicants need: 

  • A passport valid for up to three months before the expiration of the visa; 
  • A letter from the sending company or company where the foreign national provides services. The letter must be translated into Spanish or English and provide details on the position and the type of remuneration received; 
  • Copies of bank statements that prove their income is at least equivalent to the current minimum monthly wages in Colombia; and 
  • Hold insurance that covers their stay in Colombia for illness, maternity, disability, hospitalization and other considerations. 

Foreign nationals who intend to travel to Colombia will be permitted to enter the country if they have the proper entry permissions, including an entry permit. After entering the country, foreign nationals will have 90 days to apply for remote work status.

Costa Rica Remote Work Visa 

Costa Rica is a perfect remote work destination for individuals interested in exploring the rainforest and beautiful coastlines. On July 4, 2022, the country introduced a digital nomad work visa. The short-term digital nomad work visa can be granted for a period of 90 days to one year and is eligible for an additional one-year extension. 

Eligible applicants must be employed outside of Costa Rica or work as independent contractors for entities and persons outside the country. Applicants must have an average monthly salary of at least $3,000. However, applicants accompanied by a dependent must have an average monthly salary of $4,000. Eligible applicants must hold proof of health insurance that will remain valid throughout their stay in Costa Rica. 

The processing time of the application is estimated to take 15 business days from the filing date, and eligible applicants can begin the application process once the law has been officially published in the government’s official Gazette. 

Croatia Remote Work Visa 

Croatia launched a digital work visa in January 2021 with a maximum validity of 12 months. Individuals must already be located in Croatia to apply—applications from abroad will not be accepted. Individuals must be self-employed or be able to work remotely, and they must provide proof of either situation through a client contract, employment agreement, or similar documentation. 

Successful applicants must pass a criminal background check and provide proof of accommodation while in the country. Applicants must obtain health insurance and earn at least € 2,500 monthly to qualify. Applicants must obtain an OIB identification number and apply online. 

Curacao Remote Work Visa  

Curacao is a beautiful and exotic island known for its stunning beaches, diverse marine life and coral reefs. Curacao also offers a unique combination of a vibrant but simultaneously laid-back place to live. Since there are so many reefs surrounding the island, it has excellent scuba diving and snorkeling. Curacao is easy to reach by air or boat from worldwide. Wi-Fi is available throughout the country, including many places in Willemstad, the capital city.  

Curacao’s digital nomad visa is called the @Home in Curacao Visa. All nationalities can access the visa, and there is no income tax. Individuals must show they can work independently to be eligible for the visa. Applicants require proof of employment with a company based outside of Curacao. Unlike many visas, there is no minimum income requirement. 

Cyprus Remote Work Visa  

Remote workers who are looking for a warm-weather destination should add Cyprus to their list of places to work. Paphos also offers much: ancient ruins, modern resorts, beaches and shopping. Cyprus has friendly locals, and many residents speak English throughout the country.  

Cyprus now has a remote work visa called the Digital Nomad Visa Scheme. This remote work visa seeks to make Cyprus a business hub and strengthen its economy. The Digital Nomad Visa Scheme allows workers from non-EEA and non-EU countries to live and work in Cyprus temporarily. Cyprus launched the visa in 2021, initially limited to 100 applicants.  

In 2022, the number of permits issued through the visa increased to 500. The Digital Nomad Visa Scheme has an initial validity of one year. Workers can extend the visa for an additional two years after that. Dependents can go with the primary applicant for the entire duration of the visa. Cyprus may consider remote workers as tax-paying residents of Cyprus if they live there for more than 183 days per tax year.  

Individuals must meet specific criteria to apply for the visa. Remote workers must work for an employer with a business registered abroad. They must also be able to work at location-independent places and have a minimum income of $3,900 after taxes and other deductions.  

To apply for the visa, individuals need a valid passport, two notarized passport-sized photos, proof of employment, proof of income, health insurance, criminal background clearance, a resume and a letter of intent for living in Cyprus. 

Czech Republic Remote Work Visa 

With its marvelous architecture and rich history, the Czech Republic is quickly becoming one of the top destinations in Europe for remote work. The digital work visa in the Czech Republic is called the Zivno. Applicants must meet certain criteria to be eligible for the visa, including proof of accommodation for the duration of stay (at least 12 months) and proof of a trade license. Applicants must have at least € 5,587 in their bank account to be eligible for the Zivno, and the application fee is 1,800 CZK, or $80. There is also a visa processing fee of € 100. Individuals can make an appointment at the nearest Czech Embassy to apply. 

The government of the Czech Republic introduced a new digital nomad visa for nationals of select countries. Eligible individuals include citizens of Australia, Japan, Canada, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Taiwan, the U.S. or the United Kingdom working in the information technology (IT) sector. In addition, applicants must meet the following requirements: 

  • Be employed by a foreign company and have the intention of working for more than three months in the Czech Republic online; or 
  • A freelancer who intends to become a holder of a Czech business license and thus be self-employed (OSVČ); and  
  • Have an income of at least CZK 60,530 per month, which is currently 1.5 times the average gross annual salary.  

Spouses, partners, dependent students under the age of 26 and minor children of eligible individuals can apply under the program. 

Dominica Remote Work Visa  

Although Dominica is a small island, it made a name for itself as the location where the movie “Pirates of the Caribbean” was filmed. Dominica has beautiful, dramatic landscapes with volcanoes, forests, spectacular shorelines, and black-sand beaches. Dominica is also striving to be the first climate-resilient country in the world. As a result, it has banned single-use plastics. Resorts in the island nation must also purchase food locally.  

In April 2021, Dominica launched a remote work visa called the Work in Nature (WIN) Visa. This visa permits individuals to stay in the country for up to 18 months. The visa also gives remote workers other benefits, including discounts on various services and access to duty-free goods. Applicants can bring dependents along with the WIN, and families can enroll their children in local schools.  

Individuals can apply for a visa if they are at least 18 years old. A company may employ them or have their own business. Individuals must earn at least $50,000 annually or otherwise show they can financially support themselves and their dependents in Dominica. To apply for the visa, applicants need a valid passport, proof of relationship to dependents, police records from the places they’ve lived in the past five years, a bank reference letter, proof of employment, health insurance and a visa if necessary. 

Dubai Remote Work Visa  

Dubai is a city in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Although the city is small in size, it is very wealthy and has vast supplies of oil and gas reserves. Dubai has experienced significant commercial development in the past 30 years and is now a modern hub for living and working 

Dubai’s remote work visa is called the Virtual Working Programme. It is valid for one year and combines a work and residence permit. Visa holders may travel to and from Dubai during the year. Still, a continuous absence of six months or more will nullify the visa. Visa holders must obtain health insurance and proof of employment from an employer with at least a one-year minimum contract. A minimum monthly income of $3,000 is required. Business owners must have a minimum monthly income of $5,000. 

Ecuador Remote Work Visa

With its diverse landscape, jungles, wildlife, and mountains, Ecuador is a great destination for remote workers. On Sept. 27, 2022, the Government of Ecuador introduced a new two-year residence visa for remote workers. Eligible applicants include foreign nationals who are employed by or intend to provide services to a company located outside of Ecuador. Applicants can apply for a remote temporary residence visa without requiring sponsorship from a local employer in Ecuador. Currently, the visa is available to applicants from 183 countries and regions. 

Estonia Remote Work Visa 

 Estonia was the first country to create an e-residency program allowing foreign national entrepreneurs to license a business based in the European Union (EU) online. In June 2020, the country created its first remote worker visa for freelancers and remote workers. To qualify for a remote work visa, individuals must own a location-independent business or work remotely for a company located outside of Estonia. Applicants must have an income of at least € 3,504 per month, and they must have had that income level for at least the past six months. 

To apply, individuals must complete an application form online and sign electronically. They must then schedule an appointment at the closest Estonian Embassy or Consulate to apply in person. Estonia offers two visa categories: Type C (short stay), which costs € 80, and Type D, which is a longer-stay visa that costs € 100. 

Georgia Remote Work Visa 

Georgia developed a remote worker visa to attract skilled foreign workers and boost the country’s economy during the COVID-19 pandemic. To qualify, individuals must own their own location-independent business. Alternatively, they must work for a company based outside of Georgia. Qualified individuals must prove that they can pay taxes while living in Georgia, and they must have a minimum income of $2,000 per month. All travelers must have travel insurance with a six-month minimum duration. Interested individuals can complete an application online. 

Germany Remote Work Visa 

Germany is an attractive destination for remote workers because of its history, culture and dining scene. It also has one of the best Wi-Fi networks in Europe. Individuals who want to work remotely from Germany must meet certain conditions, including reporting their address in Germany and showing proof of medical coverage during their stay. They must also show proof of financial self-sustainability, which can be achieved through an employee contract, bank statements or similar documents. Workers must also provide services that will help the local economy. After establishing residency in Germany, remote workers should schedule a visa appointment with their local immigration office. Note that there is a fee of € 100 for the visa. 

Greece Remote Work Visa  

Serious beachgoers will appreciate that Greece has the longest coastline of any European country and has 6,000 islands to explore. Santorini is arguably the most famous island in Greece and one of its most beautiful. History and culture are other primary reasons why people visit Greece, and it also has a warm Mediterranean climate.  

Greece currently offers a remote work visa called the Digital Nomad Visa, which is initially valid for one year. Visa extensions for a second year may be possible. Applicants must earn at least €3,500/month to be eligible for the visa. That number increases to €4,200/month for spouses and €4,830/month for spouses and one dependent. Proof of employment and health insurance, as is a clean criminal record, are mandatory. 

Grenada Remote Work Visa  

Grenada is a Caribbean country that is home to about 100,000 people year-round. Grenada is a popular destination for its beautiful beaches and wildlife. Grenada is also known for its spices, cocoa beans and even coffee. The capital city, which is called St. George, has stunning architecture as well.  

Grenada offers remote workers a one-year remote work visa called the Remote Employment Act that workers can extend for an additional 12 months. The minimum annual income is $37,000 to apply for the visa, and applicants also need health insurance. 

Hungary Remote Work Visa 

In January 2022, Hungary introduced a new digital nomad visa called the White Card, which allows foreign nationals from countries outside of the European Union, European Economic Area, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway to live and work remotely in Hungary. The White Card is initially valid for one year. It is renewable for an additional year. 

To qualify, applicants must hold a work contract or own a share in a company with a verified profit in a country other than Hungary. The applicant cannot pursue any gainful activity from a company or related based in Hungary and cannot hold a share in a Hungarian company. Applications can be submitted through the country’s online immigration portal.

Iceland Remote Work Visa 

Iceland is an increasingly attractive destination for both U.S. and European employers and their workers. The technology sector has been one of the fastest-growing sectors in the country’s economy. Overall, Iceland’s economy has grown steadily since 2012. 

To expand opportunities for talented foreign workers, Iceland recently launched a remote work visa that allows foreign nationals to work in the country for six months. The visa program allows qualified employees to bypass normal residency requirements, which allows them to start work in Iceland sooner. 

To qualify for Iceland’s new program, individuals must have a minimum monthly income of ISK 1,000,000 ($7,722) or ISK 1,300,000 ($10,037) for workers who are traveling with dependents. Proof of employment outside of Iceland and proof of health insurance are required. 

Indonesia Remote Work Visa  

Indonesia has much to enjoy, including wildlife, stunning resorts, beaches and mountains. The country is also known for its delicious cuisine. Indonesia has over 100 volcanoes, which makes it a popular place for climbing and geology. Indonesia is also an attractive remote work destination for its picturesque islands and friendly locals.  

The remote work visa available for Indonesia (the B211a Business Visa) permits an initial 60-day stay. Workers can renew their visas two additional times for a total of six months. Applicants must show proof of employment and income to apply, and they must have no criminal record. 

The government of Indonesia introduced the Remote Worker Visa (E33G) program on 1 April   2024. This visa permits eligible foreign nationals to live in Indonesia while working remotely for their overseas employer for up to one year, with the option to renew for another year. To qualify, applicants must be employed by a foreign company, earn a minimum annual income of USD 60,000, and provide evidence of adequate funds, among other requirements. 

Italy Remote Work Visa 

Known for its ancient ruins and location on the Mediterranean Sea, Italy is a popular destination for people from all over the world. Now, in addition to visiting the country, it’s also possible to live and work in Italy through Italy’s digital nomad visa 

Introduced on March 29, 2022, this visa allows applicants to travel to Italy for work without needing to obtain work authorization or a Nulla Osta prior to arrival. Instead, eligible applicants are required to apply for an entry visa that is valid for a period of 365 days. After arrival, applicants must apply for a digital nomad visa, which is also valid for one year. 

According to the conditions of this visa, the foreign national must either be considered a highly qualified worker and be employed by a company based outside of Italy with no representative offices in the country or be self-employed. 

Jamaica Remote Work Visa 

Currently, Jamaica offers a remote work visa for individuals in the U.S. Applicants must meet several conditions to apply for a Jamaican work visa, including proving that they are either self-employed or work for a company located outside of Jamaica. A U.S. passport is required, and there are no minimum income requirements. A visa registration fee of $60 is mandatory for stays up to 90 days. The fee increases to $140 for stays between 90 days and one year. 

Japan Remote Work Visa 

The Japanese government plans to introduce a six-month digital nomad visa for certain foreign nationals beginning in the late spring of 2024. The visa will be open to nationals of 49 countries, including the United States, Australia and Singapore. Eligible applicants must make an annual income of at least ¥10 million ($68,300). The visa will be listed under the designated activities category. The visa is not eligible for renewal. Through the visa, applicants will receive a residence card or certificate.   

  • As of 5 April 2024, this visa route is only open to foreign nationals in Japan who apply to the official authorities of Japan. This visa cannot be applied at a consular post or embassy office. However, future updates may be made at certain consular posts.  
  • Dependents are not eligible under this visa category.  
  • The visa permits a maximum stay of six months and cannot be renewed.  
  • Currently, applicants cannot transfer from a visitor visa status to the digital nomad visa type. 

Latvia Remote Work Visa 

Located on the Baltic Sea, Latvia serves as a unique remote work location and as of Feb. 1, 2022, foreign nationals can apply for a digital nomad visa. The visa is initially granted for a period of one year, with the possibility to renew for an additional year. 

To qualify, applicants must be able to provide proof of having worked with an employer registered abroad that is established in one of the 37 member states of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), or be self-employed and established in one of these countries and be able to prove they can perform their duties remotely while staying in Latvia. 

Employees of an organization in an OECD member state require at least six months of work experience. All eligible applicants must earn a minimum average salary of € 3,192.50 per month. For more information on qualification requirements and application documents, check here. 

Malaysia Remote Work Visa

On Oct. 1. 2022, Malaysia became one of the first countries in Southeast Asia to offer a remote work visa. The visa, known as the DE Rantau programme pass, provides travelers with a professional visit pass, which serves as entry permission into the country. 

The pass permits a stay between three months to a maximum period of 12 months. The pass is renewable for an additional 12-month period. Spouses and children can accompany the primary applicant. According to the government, the pass fee is MYR 1,000 for primary pass holders and MYR 500 for dependents. 

Eligible applicants must also have a minimum yearly income of at least $24,000 and proof of holding an active three-month work contract with a company. The company can be based within Malaysia or outside of the country. 

Malta Remote Work Visa  

Malta, an island nation located in the Mediterranean Sea, is another remote work destination for foreign nationals whose current employment is based in another country. Launched in June 2021, the Nomad Residence Permit (NRP) allows foreign nationals from countries outside of the European Union, European Economic Area, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway to live and work remotely in Malta for a maximum period of one year. The NRP can also be renewed for an additional year if the applicant continues to meet qualifications. The government of Malta also offers a National Visa for third-country foreign nationals who wish to work in Malta for a stay less than one year.  

To qualify, applicants must have a work contract with a foreign company and meet the monthly salary requirement of € 2,700. Accompany family members must meet additional salary requirements. In addition, those looking to work remotely in Malta must have a valid entry document, health insurance coverage, plans of the intended place of stay, and pass a background check. Applications are filed electronically and require a filing fee of € 300. 

Mauritius Remote Work Visa 

Mauritius is another attractive location for remote workers. Mauritius is a stunning island in the Indian Ocean. It is attractive for those who enjoy warm weather, sun-soaked beaches and a laid-back island lifestyle.  

Mauritius has a remote work visa called the Premium Travel Visa. The Premium Travel Visa has a one-year validity, but workers can extend their visa for a second time when the year ends. Additionally, visa holders may exit Mauritius and return while their visa is active. Citizens of nearly 115 countries, including U.S. citizens, can apply for the visa. Visa holders are not required to pay taxes during the first six months of their stay. However, applicants are considered residents of Mauritius after 183 days or more.

Applicants must complete a visa application electronically. Applicants need a valid passport, a return ticket to their home country and proof of accommodations in Mauritius. Health and travel insurance are also required; applicants must have a minimum monthly income of $1,500. An additional $500 monthly income is required for each dependent under age 24. Police clearance is also required. 

Mexico Remote Work Visa 

Mexico is an ideal location for workers seeking employment in a warmer climate. It is also close to the U.S. and in the same time zone. Additionally, the World Bank reports that Mexico is an increasingly good place to start a business. Mexico’s temporary resident visa allows foreign nationals to work for up to one year. The visa is renewable for one year and then for three years. The temporary visa has a maximum of four years of validity. 

Prospective remote workers who want to work in Mexico must prove earnings of at least $1,620 per month for the past six months. Alternatively, they must have no less than $27,000 in their bank account to be issued a temporary resident visa.

Montenegro Remote Work Visa

Situated on the western coast of the Balkan Peninsula, Montenegro is seeking to open its borders to foreign nationals pursuing long-term residence with a digital nomad program that will be rolled out over three years through 2025. Foreign nationals granted this new temporary residence permit for digital nomads may remain in Montenegro and work remotely for up to a year with the possibility of extensions.  The first stages of the program include creating amendments that will regulate the status of digital nomads in Montenegro and creating an online platform for the central government for the program. 

Montserrat Remote Work Visa  

Montserrat is a Caribbean island north of Guadeloupe. This lovely island has glistening white sand beaches and a laid-back pace of life. Montserrat is a growing tourist destination renowned for its lush tropical landscapes. Brades, the capital city, has all the essentials remote workers need. The food in Montserrat is fresh, delicious and inexpensive. Public transportation is also accessible and affordable.  

Individuals interested in traveling to Montserrat for work can apply for the Remote Workers Stamp Visa, launched in January 2021. Visa holders may stay up to one year in the country, and individuals can extend the visa for a second year when the first year ends. Prospective applicants must meet several requirements to apply. Employees must hold a contract with an employer registered out of the country.

Alternatively, applicants can prove they perform freelance or contract work for clients outside Montserrat. Applicants require an annual income of at least $70,000 per year. Dependents can accompany the applicant but must provide proof of family relationship. Eligible applicants cannot hold a criminal record.

Namibia Remote Work Visa 

Located in southwest Africa, Namibia was one of the first countries in Africa to offer a remote work visa option for foreign nationals. The Government of Namibia launched a six-month remote work visa for applicants who can provide proof of having a monthly average income of $2,000. Generally, applicants require proof of a pay slip or employment contract.

Applicants must provide proof of an average income of $1,000 per month, an average income of $2,000  for accompanying spouses and an additional $500 per month for every accompanying child. 

Applicants can submit applications and supporting documents via email. 

Norway Remote Work Visa

Norway offers a remote work visa and is a popular destination for remote and freelance workers for its excellent social services. To work remotely in Norway, individuals must own their own (remote) business or work for a company located outside of Norway. Remote workers must have relevant skills and qualifications to work in the country, and they must provide proof of accommodation upon arrival. Applicants require a minimum income of € 35,719 (~$43,000). Applications must be filed at the closest Norwegian Embassy or Consulate. Applicants must also demonstrate residency in Norway. 

Panama Remote Work Visa  

Panama is a country in Central America famous for its picturesque beaches, mountains, and unique colonial architecture. Panama is appealing for its culture and natural beauty. Panama is appealing as a remote work destination for its biodiversity, stunning landscapes and economic stability.  

Panama’s government created a remote work visa through Executive Decree 198 in May 2021. The visa has an initial validity period of nine months and is extended for an additional nine months once the initial validity period ends. The visa is available to all foreign applicants who meet the qualification criteria.  

U.S. applicants must have a minimum income of $36,000. Applicants must either work remotely for a company or have their own business. Applicants must have a valid passport to apply, along with proof of police clearance. Medical insurance is also mandatory. 

Portugal Remote Work Visa 

Known for its coastal towns and food, Portugal is a scenic destination for digital nomads. In 2022, the Government of Portugal introduced a remote work visa called the Temporary-Stay Visa. The Temporary-Stay Visa initially allows individuals to live and work in Portugal for one year. The visa allows extensions four more times for a total five-year validity.  

Applicants require the following items to apply:

  • Document certifying tax residence 
  • Average monthly income over the last three months (must be at least the equivalent of four times the national minimum wage, or € 2,800/month) 
  • Work contract 
  • Promise of an employment contract 
  • Statement from the employer proving the employment relationship between the employee and the employer 

In cases of independent activity, the request must also be accompanied by the following documents: 

  • Documents proving tax residence 
  • A company contract 
  • A contract or proposal of service contract 
  • Proof of services rendered to one or more entities

Portugal’s short-term remote work visa is open to foreign nationals employed by a company located outside of the country.

Romania Remote Work Visa  

Foreign nationals should explore Romania as another location for remote work. Introduced on Jan. 17, 2022, the digital nomad visa allows foreign nationals to work and live in Romania without requiring work sponsorship from a local employer. The digital nomad visa is valid for six months and is renewable to eligible applicants.

Qualified applicants require an average income at least three times larger than the national average gross salary of Romania (RON 6,095). In addition, applicants must hold at least three years of work experience with a company registered abroad. The applicant must also provide proof of an employment contract with a company outside of Romania, identification documents, and other related documents. Saint Lucia Remote Work Visa  

Saint Lucia is a small but charming island in the Caribbean. Saint Lucia is a British Overseas Territory, an increasingly popular destination for travel and remote work. Saint Lucia is famous for its captivating natural beauty, laid-back pace of life and friendly locals. The island also has a unique culture because of its mixed French, African and native influences. Saint Lucia also has rainforests, coral reefs, volcanoes and many other natural attractions.  

Saint Lucia has a remote worker visa called Live It. Saint Lucia launched this visa in 2021. Initially, the work visa was valid for six weeks. But since its start, the government extended its validity to 12 months. Saint Lucia’s remote work has very few requirements compared to other countries. 

The Live It visa has no minimum income requirement, although applicants must note how much money they plan to bring to the island. The visa is a multiple-entry visa, so visa holders can leave and return to the country during the year that they have the visa. 

Seychelles Remote Work Visa  

Seychelles is an archipelagic island nation with 115 islands. Seychelles is an attractive remote work destination for those who want to visit a scenic and relaxed destination in the Indian Ocean. One of the most popular islands in Seychelles is Mahe, known for its diverse natural wonders, including mountains and forests. Seychelles has a buzzing capital city called Victoria and abundant picturesque shorelines.  

Seychelles has a remote work visa called the Workcation Program. The visa has two routes to apply: company employees and self-employed people with a business.  

The Workcation Program allows people to stay and work in Seychelles for up to 12 months. To apply, applicants require a valid passport and proof of income. Applicants also need to show proof of employment. Self-employed people must provide documentation that they own their own business. Remote workers will require travel and medical insurance.

South Korea Remote Worker

The South Korean government launched a digital nomad visa on 1 January 2024. The visa permits a maximum stay of up to two years for foreign nationals employed by a company outside the country.  

Eligible applicants must apply at a Korean embassy in their country of residence and provide proof of an annual income twice South Korea’s per capita gross national income (GNI).  

Spain Remote Work Visa  

The Government of Spain officially approved the Start-Up law  allowing third-country nationals to work remotely in Spain for a company based outside the country. Foreign nationals can apply for a remote work visa if they work remotely in Spain for an entity based outside of the country. 

Spain’s remote work visa permits a maximum stay of one year and can be renewed for an additional year as long as the applicant meets all requirements. Applicants must meet certain academic and professional background requirements. Applicants must hold a minimum income of €2,334 per month to obtain the visa. One unique aspect of Spain’s remote work visa is that remote workers may earn some (20%) of their income from a Spanish employer. Generally, the host company must be located outside of the country.

South Africa Visa

The government of South Africa published updated information on changes to its immigration system. This includes updates to its digital nomad visa category to be open to freelance applicants.  

The government also added a point-based system to its general work visa category. The point-based system will be determined based on the following criteria: 

  • Age, qualifications, language skills, work experience, offer of employment, salary and other factors.  

Thailand Remote Work Visa  

Known for its tropical beaches, historic landmarks, and ancient temples and ruins, Thailand offers a breathtaking and unique remote work destination in Southeast Asia. The government of Thailand launched a 10-year long-term resident (LTR) visa on Sept. 1, 2022. The visa has four categories, including a work-from-Thailand option. 

Eligible applicants can work remotely in Thailand for a well-established overseas company. Spouses and children under 20 years of age may travel and remain with the primary LTR visa holder throughout the validity period of the LTR visa. The LTR visa grants a maximum period of stay of 10 years and is renewable for an additional 10-year period. 

The government of Thailand introduced its new Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) in July 2024. The DTV permits a maximum stay of up to 180 days per visit for digital nomads, freelancers, and participants in cultural activities. It permits multiple entries and is valid for five years.

Eligible applicants must provide proof of holding 500,000 THB and be able to give the visa fee of 10,000 THB. The visa also permits dependents, such as a spouse or children under the age of 20, to accompany the holder.

Turkey Digital Nomad Visa

The government of Turkey introduced a digital nomad visa for select foreign nationals. Once fully implemented, this visa will allow holders to reside in Turkey while working remotely for employers or clients based outside the country.  

The eligible nationals include those from Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, the United Kingdom and the U.S.

United Arab Emirates Remote Work Visa  

The Government of Dubai has introduced a remote work visa called the virtual working programme to attract remote foreign workers to the country. Dubai’s economy is considered one of the most diverse in the world. Technology and research-based firms are key drivers of the country’s economy. 

Developed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Dubai’s remote work visa was the first one launched for foreign nationals in the Middle East. Qualified individuals can now work in Dubai for up to one year through the program while remaining employed by an overseas company. Applicants must meet certain requirements. Dependents and family members can join remote workers under the visa program. 

Successful applicants must have a minimum monthly salary of $5,000 and proof of employment with a minimum work contract of 12 months. Applicants require proof of income. Business owners can show proof of company ownership instead of an employment contract. 

Uruguay Remote Work Visa  

Uruguay is the second smallest country in South America. Known for its scenic and sprawling coastline, the country joined the ranks of countries worldwide, offering remote work options for employees who are working remotely. Uruguay’s remote work visa, the Provisional Identity Card, was introduced to modify a past decree. The visa permits a 180-day stay or less. The Card is renewable for an additional 180-day period. 

Qualified applicants require employment from a company registered outside of Uruguay. Foreign national remote workers do not require sponsorship in Uruguay to obtain a Provisional Identity Card. 

In addition, remote workers do not need to register with Uruguay’s social security service.

Can I Work Remotely On a Tourist Visa? 

Although remote work visas are short-term, they are not the same as tourist visas. Remote work visas specifically allow people to work while they’re in another country. In contrast, tourist visas do not necessarily allow employment. Some tourist visas prohibit the visa holder from working while they are in the country. Another critical distinction between remote and tourist visas is duration. Tourist visas usually have a validity period of 30-90 days, while most remote work visas are valid for at least six months.
