Greece: Expansion of EU Blue Card Permissions

Key Points

  • Greece will permit select family members to apply for an EU Blue Card beginning 5 June 2024

Overview

Effective June 5, 2024, foreign nationals entering Greece under visa-exempt status or on a C visa can now apply for an EU Blue Card. Previously, only D visa holders could apply.

Applicants can now choose whether to undergo the optional pre-screening process, which requires employers to get approval from the Ministry of Immigration before the applicant’s arrival. Although this step can add up to eight weeks to processing, it can reduce the risk of rejection and may result in shorter processing times.

Employers may prefer pre-screening for low-urgency hires, skipping it for urgent cases, or when confident about application success.
