The U.S. State Department has released new visa application questions for certain foreign nationals applying for a visa at a U.S. consulate. These new questions will be administered only to those applicants who are considered by the consulate to pose heightened security concerns.
Those visa applicants who are flagged for security reasons might be asked to provide supplemental information, including:
- Five years of public social media account information, email addresses and phone numbers
- All prior passport numbers
- Fifteen years of residence, employment and travel history (including source of travel funds)
- The names of all children, siblings, and current and former spouses
Not every individual will be subject to the new visa application questions, and this has not been implemented at every U.S. consulate. But any foreign nationals applying for a visa might find it helpful to prepare for the possibility that they will be asked to respond. Gathering social media, travel, work and residence history, records of prior passports and other details before a visa appointment could help minimize delays in the event a traveler is asked to provide additional information.
