USCIS Lengthens Green Card Validity Extension for Green Card Renewals

September 23, 2024

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced that it will automatically extend the validity of green cards for certain applicants.

Lawful permanent residents who properly file Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card, will receive an automatic green card validity extension of 36 months. Previously, USCIS provided a 24-month green card validity extension

USCIS has updated its Form I-90 receipt notice language to reflect the new extension. On Sept. 10, 2024, USCIS started printing amended receipt notices for eligible applicants with a pending Form I-90. Those applicants may present their receipt notices along with an expired green card to prove continued status and employment authorization.

USCIS created the 36-month validity extension for applicants experiencing longer processing times. Now, applicants will receive proof of lawful permanent resident status while they wait for a renewed green card.

Applicants who no longer have a green card and need to demonstrate lawful permanent resident status while they’re waiting for a replacement green card can contact the USCIS Contact Center to schedule an appointment at a USCIS Field Office. USCIS may issue an Alien Documentation, Identification, and Telecommunications (ADIT) stamp for applicants after they file Form I-90.
