U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and other organizations nationwide are currently celebrating Constitution Week, which began Friday, September 15, and runs through tomorrow, September 22. During the week, the wait for citizenship ends for more than 30,000 individuals who will become America’s newest U.S. citizens.
What is the significance of Constitution Week?
Constitution Week takes place in conjunction with the observance of Constitution Day and Citizenship Day, both falling annually on September 17 in honor of the signing of the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787.
The USCIS commenced the week last Friday with a naturalization ceremony at the National Archives in Washington, D.C.—the home of the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the Declaration of Independence.
“Celebrating Constitution Week with a naturalization ceremony in the hallowed halls where our nation’s founding document lives is a great honor,” said Acting USCIS Director McCament. “The Constitution plays a meaningful role in the lives of all Americans, but particularly for those who are Americans by choice. The Constitution not only establishes the rule of law, it also creates the framework for the system that exists today, empowering immigrants to become citizens.”
In partnership with USCIS, the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts is also holding naturalization ceremonies in honor of Constitution Day and Citizenship Day.
