Uganda will transition from using machine-readable East African passports to e-passports by April 4, 2022.

What are the Changes?

Uganda launched the Ugandan East African e-passport system in 2018. Initially, the program included a two-year transitional period to change from machine-readable to electronic passports. The original deadline has been extended through April 4, 2022.

Who is Affected?

The change applies to international travelers with Ugandan East African passports.

What Should Employers and Applicants Know?

Fees vary for applicants based on the type of passport they request. The fee for a regular East African e-passport is USD $67.81, or UGX 250,000. A service international East African e-passport costs USD $108.49, or UGX 400,000. The price of an international East African diplomatic passport is USD $135.61, which equals UGX 500,000.
