Overview
Starting January 2, 2021, individuals who receive new Alien Resident Certificates (ARC/APRC) will be entered into the same numbering system as Taiwanese citizens.
What are the Changes?
Currently, Taiwan has two separate numeric systems for Taiwanese citizens and foreign nationals. In January 2021, Taiwan is consolidating the two systems. The systems integration will facilitate many aspects of daily life for foreign nationals in Taiwan, including making it easier for them to take public transportation, shop online, complete banking transactions, and more.
Who is Affected?
The change applies to foreign nationals who are in Taiwan or who plan to enter the country. Foreign nationals who do not yet have an ARC/APRC card will be assimilated into the new system automatically if they receive their cards on or after January 2, 2021. Foreign nationals with existing ARC/APRC cards do not need to take immediate action. They must obtain a new card within 10 years. Foreign nationals will automatically receive a new card if they change their address or make any other adjustments to their personal information during that time. Individuals may also voluntarily change their ARC cards after January 1, 2021.
