The government of South Africa opened its newest draft National Biometric Identification and Registration Bill for public comment. Written submissions must be made on or before 30 June 2023. The bill aims to create a digital national identification system for foreign nationals applying for permanent residence or temporary stay permissions in the country.
The system will include information on the person’s date of birth, gender identity, including a gender neutral identity number for non-binary persons, immigration reference numbers and more.
