Key Points
- New Zealand announced an increase in the maximum duration for work and visitor visas for partners of New Zealand citizens
Overview
The government of New Zealand announced an increase in the maximum duration for work and visitor visas for partners of New Zealand citizens or residents who have been living together for at least 12 months, extending it from 2 to 3 years.
This change allows couples more time to save for residence application fees and aligns better with visa durations for partners of temporary migrants. It applies to applications received from Oct. 1, 2024, and to those submitted but not yet decided by that date. Current visas will not be automatically extended; applicants must submit a new application for the longer duration.
This adjustment supports the government’s goal of building a world-class immigration system to attract and retain the skills necessary for economic growth.
