The government of Japan provided the following updates for foreign nationals eligible to apply for their remote work visa types. These updates include:
- Currently, this visa route is only open to foreign nationals in Japan who apply to the official authorities of Japan. This visa cannot be applied at a consular post or embassy office. However, future updates may be made at certain consular posts.
- Dependents are not eligible under this visa category.
- The visa permits a maximum stay of six months and cannot be renewed.
- Currently, applicants cannot transfer from a visitor visa status to the digital nomad visa type.

Overview
The Japanese government plans to introduce a six-month digital nomad visa for certain foreign nationals beginning in the late spring of 2024. The visa will be open to nationals of 49 countries, including the United States, Australia and Singapore. Eligible applicants must make an annual income of at least ¥10 million ($68,300). The visa will be listed under the designated activities category. The visa is not eligible for renewal. Through the visa, applicants will receive a residence card or certificate.
