The European Parliament approved draft legislation that will add Romania and Bulgaria to the Schengen zone during the first reading of the proposal. If the legislation is fully approved, nationals of Romania and Bulgaria will be permitted to travel to participating Schengen member states visa-free on a short-term basis.

The European Parliament approved the first reading of legislation to add Romania and Bulgaria to the Schengen zone. According to the proposal, the addition of the two countries will take place before the end of 2023.
