European Union/India: Schengen Visa Permissions Updated

Last Updated on October 23, 2024

Key Points

  • The European Commission introduced new regulations that simplify visa procedures for Indian nationals seeking Schengen visas

Overview

On April 18, 2024, the European Commission introduced new regulations regarding issuing multiple entry visas to Indian nationals. This revised visa regime, known as the “cascade” system, aims to simplify visa procedures for Indian travelers seeking short-stay Schengen visas

Under these rules, Indian nationals residing in India can now obtain long-term, multi-entry Schengen visas valid for up to two years, provided they have lawfully utilized two visas within the past three years and their passport has sufficient validity. Following the two-year visa, eligible travelers may qualify for a five-year visa.

During the validity of these visas, holders enjoy travel privileges equivalent to visa-free nationals. Schengen visas allow holders to travel freely within the Schengen area for short stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. While these visas do not impose specific travel purposes, they do not grant the right to work.
