Canada: Updates on the Innovation Stream

Key Points

  • Canada published updates on the latest changes to its Innovation Steam launched under the 2023 Tech Talent Strategy

Overview of the Innovation Stream

The government of Canada introduced a new employer-specific work permit pathway within the Innovation Stream of the International Mobility Program. This pathway is designed for foreign nationals who with job offers in high-skilled occupations from employers participating in Canada’s Global Hypergrowth Project (GHP).

Eight companies in Canada have been selected to participate in the GHP. This work permit route eliminates the need for employers and foreign nationals to undergo the Labour Market Impact Assessment process, simplifying the temporary work permit process and resulting in shorter processing times for eligible foreign nationals.

Work permits granted under this pathway can be valid for up to five years. The Innovation Stream was initially announced by the government in June 2023 as part of Canada’s Tech Talent Strategy, aimed at attracting foreign nationals who can contribute to emerging technology innovation in the country.
