Key Points
- Canada will require Mexican nationals holding a valid US nonimmigrant visa or Canadian visa to apply for electronic travel authorization
Overview
The Canadian government introduced new travel requirements for citizens of Mexico on 29 February 2024. As a result, Mexican citizens who hold a valid US nonimmigrant visa or have held a Canadian visa in the past 10 years and are traveling by air on a Mexican passport can apply for an electronic travel authorization (eTA).
Most Mexican citizens currently holding US visas will continue to enjoy visa-free travel to Canada. However, those not meeting these conditions must apply for a Canadian visitor visa.
This response results from the increase in asylum claims made by Mexican citizens that are refused, withdrawn or abandoned.
