India’s Bureau of Immigration recently announced its launch of electronic services on February 12, 2018 for in-country registrations, visa extensions, residential permits and other services.
India’s new E-Services
At the moment, these new E-Services apply to only Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru and Chennai, which means that foreign nationals in these regions must file the appropriate documentation online rather than visit the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) in their region, as was practice before.
Transition to electronic submissions
During the current transition period, FRROs are continuing to grant in-person services at the moment, though submissions through the new online portal will begin to take precedence sometime in the future.
Going forward
The details of the transition are unknown at the moment, including the new online process and the possible FRROs that will be participating in the future, but the switch to India’s new E-Services via the online immigration portal will be gradual.
