Welcome to the U.S. immigration news briefing from Corporate Immigration Partners, PC (CIP PC). The team is here to provide the latest updates on policy changes affecting corporate immigration. This update outlines the recent suspension of visas from the U.S. Embassy in Bogota, Columbia.
Suspension of Visa Issuance at U.S. Embassy in Colombia
On January 26, 2025, Secretary of State Marco Rubio authorized an immediate suspension of visa issuance at the U.S. Embassy in Bogota, Colombia. This action was taken in response to Colombian President Gustavo Petro’s refusal to accept two repatriation flights he previously authorized. Secretary Rubio also authorized travel sanctions on individuals and their families responsible for U.S. repatriation flight operations.
Analysis of Recent Colombia Visa Changes
The suspension of visa issuance affects nonimmigrant and immigrant visas. These measures will continue until Secretary Rubio lifts the suspension. Visa appointments previously scheduled for early this week have been canceled. As of January 30, 2025, the U.S. Department of State has not provided updates on when new visa appointments can be scheduled.
Administration Response
Secretary Rubio’s immediate response to President Pedro’s refusal constitutes another example of the Trump administration’s “America First” policy. The suspension leaves many visa applicants uncertain as they do not know whether they will be able to schedule their appointments.
