State Department Consolidates Processing of H and L Visa Applications in China

Last Updated on February 23, 2023

The U.S. Department of State recently announced plans to consolidate the processing of L and H visa applications for Chinese foreign nationals seeking work in the U.S.

What Changes Were Announced?

The final change is as follows:

  • Starting March 1, 2019, H and L visa interviews will only be conducted at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing or the U.S. Consulates General in Guangzhou or Shanghai
  • The State Department will no longer conduct H or L visa interviews at the U.S. Consulates General in Chengdu or Shenyang

Visa applicants should be aware that this change may result in increased visa interview wait times at the embassy/consulates in Beijing, Guangzhou, and/or Shanghai, and plan their travels/applications accordingly.
