Czech Republic: Country-Specific Brexit Information

Last Updated on February 23, 2023

UK nationals who have been legally living in the country before December 31, 2020 when the UK withdraws from the EU, may continue to live, study, and work in the Czech Republic through rights established through the Withdrawal Agreement. UK nationals who are residents of the Czech Republic by the end of the Brexit transition will be covered by the Withdrawal Agreement, and their rights will be protected if they remain a resident of the Czech Republic. UK nationals should make sure they are registered as residents.

Entry and Residency Requirements

Individuals who have a British Citizen passport do not require a visa to enter the Czech Republic. Certain requirements may apply to individuals who plan to stay for more than three months. UK nationals who are planning a longer-term stay in the Czech Republic should contact the Embassy of the Czech Republic for details and questions.

UK nationals who are residents of the Czech Republic before December 31, 2020 must secure a Czech residence permit to stay in the country. They must register with the Czech Foreign Police first. Confirmation of registration is required to apply for Czech residency status with the Foreign Police.

A biometric residence permit is required for UK nationals in 2021. UK nationals who have a certificate of temporary residence can apply for a biometric residence card between August 2, 2021 and August 2, 2022. Additional details will be provided on the application process when available.

Travel is permitted in the Schengen area for up to 90 days in a 180-day period without a visa to visit family or friends; attend business meetings, sports events, or cultural events; for tourism, and for short-term study or training.

Travelers should note that visits to other Schengen countries within the previous 180 days also count towards the 90-day maximum stay. Any days spent in the Czech Republic before January 1, 2021 will not count towards the 90-day limit.

Working in the Czech Republic

Work requirements will not change for residents in the Czech Republic before or after December 31, 2020, provided they remain legal residents.

UK nationals may need to apply for one or both of the following documents:

  • UK criminal records certificate
  • Extract from the Czech Criminal Register

Frontier workers may need a permit to prove that they are a frontier worker. More information will be provided as available.

UK nationals who began working in the Czech Republic by the end of the Brexit transition, but who do not intend to live in the country either temporarily or permanently, can maintain access to cross-border employment. However, they are not eligible for a residence permit from the Ministry of the Interior.

Passports

A valid passport is required to enter the country starting in 2021. Passports must have at least a six-month validity, except for individuals transiting the Czech Republic or who fall within the scope of the Withdrawal Agreement. Individuals must renew their passport prior to traveling if they have less than six months remaining on their passport. Additional months cannot be added to the passport’s six-month validity using passports that are more than 10 years old.
