Trump Establishes New Immigration Vetting Center

On Tuesday, President Trump signed a National Security Presidential Memorandum that directed the establishment of a National Vetting Center to improve the coordination among executive departments and agencies in identifying threats to national security and public safety.

Why a vetting center?

With enhanced national security as the central motivation for the memorandum, the National Vetting Center will follow an “integrated approach to use data held across national security components” in order to better screen those who want to enter the U.S.

The memorandum indicates that the purpose of this center is to better “coordinate and use intelligence and other information to identify individuals who present a threat to national security, border security, homeland security, or public safety.”

The center’s focus and impact

A plan for the National Vetting Center’s implementation is ordered to be submitted to the President within six months, and this new agency will operate under the oversight of the National Vetting Governance Board.

According to a report from CNN, the focus of the vetting center’s attention will be on travelers to the U.S., visa applicants and other immigrants, for whom the impact isn’t clear at this time.
