We commissioned Harris Poll to survey more than 700 visa and green card holders (“expats”) about what they value in their employers and what they want for their future. The result? Actionable insights into every stage of the hiring process, from sourcing through acquisition, retention and attrition.
As employers continue to struggle to fill skills gaps at their organizations, global talent — especially in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields — is playing an increasingly crucial role in delivering the skills that are necessary to keep companies competitive and innovative. But competition for top talent is fierce, and sourcing workers from other countries can seem daunting.
In our survey, we asked expats about what they value in their employers, how they choose one company over another, what makes them feel motivated at work and more. Their answers provide the keys for creating a competitive company immigration policy, appealing to the world’s best and brightest workers, and keeping and supporting top employees.
Some findings include:
- Expats have the higher education that enables them to fill skills gaps at companies, and of the top 10 industries they work in, 60 percent are STEM fields.
- Thirty percent of expats plan to stay at their current company for five years or more.
- Visa holders identify innovation as their motivation for working in the United States, yet green card holders point primarily to family.
- Seventy percent of visa holders say the green card sponsorship policy of a company is very or extremely important in deciding whether they’d work for the organization.
- Seven in 10 expats say their company paid for some or all of the attorney fees associated with their visa application.
- Sixty-three percent of expats feel they fit in completely or very well, especially in STEM fields.
