[Updated] Costa Rica: Residency Card Appointment Delays until 2023

24 March 2023 Update: The government of Costa Rica announced delays in the processing of Residency Identify Card (DIMEX) renewals.  

Due to delays, the government has shared that foreign nationals will be permitted to hold legal status in Costa Rica without holding a valid DIMEX so long as they have booked or attended an appointment with the General Immigration Directorate.  

However, these individuals may experience difficulties with traveling outside of the country while the DIMEX is processed.

The government of Costa Rica announced that it will cancel residency cards (DIMEX) photo appointments until the beginning of 2023. Due to delays, the government has shared that foreign nationals will be permitted to hold legal status in Costa Rica without holding a valid DIMEX if they can provide proof of having booked a photo appointment in 2023.

The government of Costa Rica declared that it would cancel DIMEX photo appointments until 2 January 2023. The government stated that this decision was made due to shortages of materials.
